The Beach House
The Beach House has been serving the spirit and romance of surfing since 1962. The shop first opened in Summerland, CA just four miles from The Queen of the Coast, Rincon Point. Needless to say, the shop was closed when the surf was up. Over 50 years later we’re still serving the same surfers and their families, although we don’t close for waves these days.

1969 Yater Hawaiian Pocket Rocket: A Classic Surfboard from the Shortboard Revolution When it comes to legendary Yater surfboards, few models capture the spirit of the shortboard revolution like this 1969 Yater Hawaiian Pocket Rocket. Measuring 8’6” x 19” x 3.25” and weighing 12 lbs, this board was purpose-built by Renny Yater to handle the power of larger Hawaiian waves. Designed for Hawaii vs. Rincon Renny Yater, one of the true masters of surfboard shaping, designed different versions of the Pocket Rocket depending on where they would be surfed. The Hawaiian Pocket Rocket was longer and narrower than the models shaped for locals at Rincon Point in Carpinteria, California, giving it the speed, paddle power, and stability needed for the heavy surf of Hawaii. While the Rincon models were shorter and looser, the Hawaiian version stood apart as a refined tool for serious waves. This distinction helped cement the Pocket Rocket as one of Yater’s most popular surfboard models throughout the 1970s. A distinctive signed Santa Barbara Surf Shop Hawaii logo A Product of the Shortboard Revolution The Yater Pocket Rocket was born directly out of the experimentation that defined the late 1960s shortboard era. Surfers and shapers were breaking away from the longboard tradition, seeking boards that allowed for more radical maneuvers, faster lines, and adaptability to different wave conditions. Renny Yater’s Hawaiian Pocket Rocket embodied this movement. Its sleek outline, narrower width, and pointed nose made it one of the most progressive boards of its time. Surfers who rode it were able to push the limits of performance, especially in challenging conditions. Textured Deck Innovation One of the standout features of this 1969 Yater surfboard is its textured deck finish. Instead of relying solely on wax, Yater incorporated a textured surface that provided better grip underfoot. This was an innovative touch during the shortboard revolution and became a signature detail of the Pocket Rocket model. Legacy of the Yater Hawaiian Pocket Rocket Today, the 1969 Yater Hawaiian Pocket Rocket remains highly respected among surfboard collectors and surf history enthusiasts. It represents not only a shift in surfboard design but also the pioneering spirit of Renny Yater, who helped shape the future of performance surfing. Whether admired as a piece of craftsmanship or remembered for its role in the evolution of surf culture, this Yater surfboard stands as an icon of innovation and style. Come on down to check out this legendary board at the Santa Barbara Surfing Museum!
